The Shared Path
We know that green places and shared spaces are really important to our community and that options for safe walking and cycling, especially with littlies, are currently non-existent.
Having highways run through the middle of our community makes this a tough problem to solve. Luckily we are up to the task!
Our committee has spent hours and hours (make that weeks and weeks) looking at different options to create a shared walking and cycling path. Several options were discounted before an option for a shared path came to light.
So, what's the plan?
We’re still in the preliminary stages of the project and details are not yet confirmed. The big picture is a 2.5km trail that cuts through farmland and then runs alongside State Highway 15, which will provide safe and accessible biking and walking for a wide range of users, allowing both locals and visitors to our community to enjoy healthy lifestyles
Long-term we’re hoping to connect it to a wider network of trails (we can dream big, right?!).
Phase 1
We are in the early days of planning and are working through logistical and legal issues to ensure we can get the project off the ground before we get our community’s hopes up.
We are in discussions with local landowners and neighbouring properties, as well as talking with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Whangārei District Council to ensure they’re on board. We need to do all this before we start planning the physical work needed, crunching numbers and looking for funding.
It’s a big project, and we’re up to the task, but we can’t do it alone…
Support needed
We will need support from our community. From planting days to donations of money, time, services and trades, we’ll be calling on our community to help turn this project from a plan into reality.
